Second in a series of four videos where Resmaa talks about his new book, The Quaking of America. Resmaa talks about who the book is for.

New York Times bestselling author and trauma specialist Resmaa Menakem, MSW, LICSW, SEP, addresses the coming political and social turmoil in his new book, The Quaking of America, which Resmaa calls “An embodied guide to navigating our nation’s upheaval and racial reckoning.” Publication Date: April 12, 2022

Resmaa is well-known for the bestselling My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies., which spent seven months on the New York Times list. Originally, he planned to write a sequel, but with the attempted coup In January 2021 and the disturbing extreme events that followed, Resmaa shifted gears to respond to this coming emergency. “It became clear that we Americans need a very different book in order to move through both the racial reckoning and the crisis of democracy we will almost certainly face in 2022 through 2025. The Quaking of America is that book.”

This book is about preparing our bodies and our communities for growing radicalization, violence, and civil war – and, if possible, preventing it. It’s also about leaning into our racial reckoning and beginning to create a living embodied antiracist culture. In The Quaking of America, Resmaa shares many embodied “practices” based on mindfulness, neuroscience, and mostly his own personal experience as a therapist who has worked extensively with hundreds of thousands of people around racialized trauma. Nearly every chapter has a body-based practice for readers to do. As Resmaa says, “You will not just read this book. You will do this book. You will experience it with your body.”

The Quaking of America is a book of insight, a call to action, and a manual for facing the coming societal and personal traumas, Ultimately, as Resmaa points out, this is a book about healing.
